Alright, so you’re heading out on vacation to Maui. That’s so exciting! Maui is a bucket list destination for many folks, so making the trek here is an accomplishment in and of itself. Soon enough, you’ll be relaxing on the sand, listening to the waves, and letting your worries drift away. There’s just one more thing to think about before you get here, though. Once you’ve made it to Maui, you’re probably wondering…how do I get around the island?
Don’t worry! We’re here to answer any questions you have about traveling around Maui, whether you’re looking to island hop or stay local. Our tried-and-true methods will help ensure you get everywhere you need to be, safe and sound!
Ready to dive into the world of transportation on Maui? Let’s do it! Here are our best tips and tricks for getting around the island.
Do You Need a Car in Maui?
Not necessarily! Your Maui itinerary will determine your need for a car. Many people travel here for the beautiful weather and relaxing beach days, so if you’re staying in an oceanfront Maui condo, you won’t need to travel far to reach that vacation goal.
Our rentals are within walking distance of many local restaurants and shops, but if you want to explore more around the island, you have options!
Is There Public Transportation in Maui?
Yes, there is! Maui’s public transportation is an excellent alternative if you're planning on a more laid-back itinerary. The Maui Bus operates several routes that connect popular areas like Lahaina, Kihei, Kahului, and Wailuku.
Fares are affordable (just a couple of dollars per ride), and you can also buy day passes if you plan to hop on and off a few times. There are even several opportunities for free fare, if you’re over 55 years old or under 24 years old and have a valid student ID, for example. While the Maui Bus doesn’t run super late or reach every remote spot, it’s a solid option if you're staying near the bus lines and aren’t in a rush to get anywhere!
Utilizing public transportation can work especially well if you’re spending a few days lounging at the beach and only need to venture out occasionally. It’s a great way to experience the island without blowing your budget on transportation!
How To Pay For the Maui Bus?
You can pay for the Maui Bus online, or buy a ticket when you board.
Take a Guided Tour
The public transportation in Maui tends to stick to main routes in town and doesn’t take you out further to some of the sites you want to see. Don’t worry, though! You can still explore popular activities in Maui like the Road to Hana, even without a car! Local companies provide tours to famous Maui landmarks, so you don’t have to miss out on the action.
Check out these guided tours to Haleakalā National Park, the Road to Hana, and the ‘Iao Valley State Monument.
Travel By Bike or Moped
Bikes and mopeds are a nice middle ground transportation option between renting a car and traveling around Maui on foot. For shorter trips to local restaurants and attractions, bikes and mopeds are perfect! While they won’t be able to take you everywhere on Maui, they’re ideal for exploring the part of the island you’re staying on.
Ride Shares
The million-dollar question most folks have when traveling here is: Can you take an Uber or Lyft in Maui?
Yes, you can! Uber and Lyft both operate on Maui. Generally, Uber and Lyft rides are pretty expensive, but they can offer a nice alternative to renting a car for the full trip. If you just need a ride from the airport or a lift to one specific spot, but you won’t need to drive around your whole trip, ride-share apps can be a great option.
It is important to note that ride-share apps are most popular in more touristy areas. We wouldn’t recommend using Lyft or Uber to ride to a remote location, because even though they’ll take you out there, it will be very difficult to travel back. If you do take a rideshare to a more remote location, have a plan for making your way back to town. Drivers aren’t often hanging around in less populated spots!
Rent a Car
Of course, renting a car is the most convenient option for getting around Maui. You don’t have to work off of anyone else’s schedule—whether that be the bus, guided tours, or the availability of rideshare apps. Plus, you can drive anywhere you want to on the island, without the limitations of using a bicycle or moped. If it’s in your budget, renting a car will make your trip to Maui the most seamless.
There are plenty of options for car rentals in Maui, ranging from big names like Enterprise to local companies you may not have heard of before. Of course, pricing options can vary based on what kind of car you select, how many days, and where you plan to return your rental, but you can find rentals for around $100 a day! When you compare that with the costs associated with Ubers, Lyfts, and guided tours, it’s really not bad, especially if you have to factor in the whole family.
